Job Description:

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income persons and groups in western Ohio, seeks a dynamic, creative, and hardworking attorney for its Dayton office to lead a team in launching an exciting community lawyering project.  Join us and increase access to justice in the Greater Dayton community!

The attorney will:

  • Develop, lead, supervise, and coordinate community-based advocacy projects
  • Identify and develop metrics to measure project success and impact
  • Provide legal representation to low-income individuals, families, and community groups in targeted neighborhoods
  • Engage and collaborate with community residents and community partners to identify individual and neighborhood needs and legal or policy solutions
  • Develop and facilitate community-based training and legal education for residents

The ideal applicant has practical knowledge and experience in two or more areas of poverty law, understands socio-cultural issues of poverty, and can use a community lawyering approach to delivering legal services.  The attorney must have excellent interpersonal skills and be experienced in working in collaborative environments.

The applicant must also have leadership, supervisory, and mentoring experience, the ability to handle and supervise major advocacy projects, and the ability to communicate community lawyering values to team members and incorporate them into legal advocacy. Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish is required for this position.   Some travel required.  Membership in Ohio Bar or ability to be admitted by motion or temporary certification is required.  The successful candidate must possess excellent legal and communication skills, experience with case management software and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), ability to relate well with clients living in poverty, and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Federal litigation experience is preferred. Salary depends on experience.
