Pay Rate:  $45,000 – $48,000 Annual Salary

 

Position Summary:

Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity (MVHFH) is a nonprofit housing organization that brings people together to build homes, community and hope in Lucas County.  Our vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.  We work toward this vision by building and improving homes in partnership with individuals and families in need of a decent and affordable place to live.

 

The Lead Carpenter is responsible for successful completion of home repair or reconstruction jobs for low-income homeowners requiring assistance with health, safety and code related issues on the interior or exterior of their home.   Examples of potential projects include exterior painting, decks or ramps, doors, windows, drywall and flooring.  The work includes completing a project on time, on budget, and maintaining a high level of quality, safety, professional communication, volunteer management, and working as a community partner promoting Habitat’s mission to eliminate substandard housing and revitalize neighborhoods.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Establish, follow, and evaluate worksite safety program, facilitate safety talks, and routinely submit completed all required safety documentation to ensure Safety Policy is adhered to at all job sites. Ensure that Habitat Staff, Habitat Pros, and all other volunteers follow the Safety Policy.
  • Complete Competent Person Training and maintain certification.

·         Plan, implement, oversee, and perform hands-on construction tasks as directed. ·         Plan out each assigned project and stage necessary materials.  ·         Supervise and lead work crews, contractors, volunteers and partner families during project.·         Assist with the recruiting of skilled volunteers from throughout the community to work on projects, and support in other aspects of the affiliate’s ministry.·         Ensure Safety Policy and procedures are followed at each work site by staff, contractors, volunteers and homeowners. ·         Take responsibility for timely, financially sound and accurate completion and reporting of all repair projects. Ensure the project meets the original scope of work and code requirements.  ·         “Fixes” any construction task performed below acceptable standards by volunteers.

  • Assists in supervision of job sites on each designated workday and works to ensure construction is accomplished in accordance with approved permits and scope of work.
  • Assists in training volunteers and partner families about construction tasks and appropriate safety measures.
  • Treats Partner Families and volunteers with respect and dignity. Strives to make their construction involvement meaningful.
  • Understands elements that contribute to successful volunteering and helps ensure that volunteers have a positive, encouraging environment thus motivating them to return.
  • Helps create awareness of the mission of Habitat for Humanity through outreach to the community
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Certifications and Skills

  • A bachelor’s degree/credentials in appropriate field or equivalent experience preferred.  Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
  • Licensing in the building trades a plus
  • Able to problem solve and troubleshoot.
  • Knowledge of construction methods and various trades such as demolition, framing, underlayment, drywall hanging, taping and finishing, painting, flooring installation, finish carpentry (trim, case, base, shoe, crown, cabinet installation, window, door and siding installation).
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors, sometimes in tight spaces and able to adapt to conditions and circumstances.
  • Solve math problems quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to interact and communicate well with the customer, manager, and subcontractors through the job in a polite and business-like manner.
  • Self-starter and independent worker with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with various hand tools and power equipment and keep tools and worksite in a clean, safe condition.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills, ability to foster trust, credibility and cohesive teamwork among persons with diverse talents, backgrounds and perspectives. This also relates to coordinating volunteers on the worksite.
  • Ability to work on a flexible schedule and to work some evenings and/or weekends.
  • Well organized.
  • Has a desire to learn new skills & techniques.
  • Paid or volunteer experience with non-profit community-based organizations a plus.
  • Must be a good listener and be able to engage in well-considered discussions.

  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting equipment (up to 60 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.
  • OSHA 10 or Habitat Competent Person Trained a plus.
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, general computer expertise such as email, ability to learn and execute various software databases and systems.  Ability to learn and use cell phone apps as needed.
  • Certification for forklift operation (training provided, if necessary).
  • CPR, AED and First Aid certification required (training provided, if necessary).
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity’s auto insurance
  • Must pass background check including criminal records and sex offender registry prior to offer of employment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and other Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity staff.
  • Willingness to attend training and conferences as appropriate.
  • Must have commitment to the Habitat mission and uphold its values and ethics.
