Independent Living Manager

The Ability Center (ACT) is a non-profit Center for Independent Living serving seven counties in NW Ohio. With the assistance of competent, professional staff, and the support of volunteers, ACT works for the rights and concerns of people living with disabilities on local, state, regional, and national levels. Our mission is to advocate, educate, partner, and provide services supporting people with disabilities to thrive within their community.

The Independent Living (IL) Manager is a strong voice for independent living and disability rights in the rural community. The manager will promote ACT services in the four-county area and seek collaborative non-duplicative opportunities with other organizations. Will work with consumers to assist them in gaining knowledge and skills to maintain and sustain independent living, specifically related to durable medical equipment (DME). Assist in providing access to other core services for all rural consumers. Will act as a liaison to ACT Toledo staff for programs based out of the main office.

Main Essential Functions:

  • Ensure that all core services are available to consumers living in the four-county area including Advocacy, I&R, IL skills, Peer Support/Mentoring, Transition, and Diversion.
  • Identify the need for durable medical equipment; determine consumer demand, discover other potential providers, find gaps in availability, and determine opportunities for programming.
  • Respond to requests for durable medical equipment, complete an intake and IL application, and ensure all paperwork and agreements are completed.
  • Complete other comprehensive intakes, working with consumers to make informed choices and achievable IL goals.
  • Create a network of resources to support consumers in their pursuit for independence and document partnerships in appropriate databases.
  • Develop\maintain relationships with community orgs and consumers to expand opportunities in the four-county area.
  • Market programs and services to the community in conjunction with ACT’s marketing department through a variety of media outlets; participate in outreach events related to disability and service providers.
  • Responsible for managing grants associated with rural office programming. Complete necessary paperwork, track hours, and create reports as needed.
  • Understand disability rights legislation and work with ACT’s attorney on technical matters.
  • Manage the rural office budget.

Qualifications: Prefer candidate have a bachelor’s degree in a disability-related field and demonstrated knowledge and application of the IL Philosophy. Must possess at least 3 years’ experience with programs that serve persons with disabilities. Previous experience in the areas of DME, IL programs and services, budgeting, grant management, decision-making, project management, supervision are preferred. Candidates must exhibit excellent communication skills, an understanding of statutes and legislation protecting the civil rights of persons with disabilities and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate others.

Positive attitude towards the needs, abilities, and rights of persons with disabilities. Ability to maintain effective, positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and community agencies and businesses.

Essential Physical Demands: The essential physical demands described here must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee in this position will need to remain stationary for periods of time while working in a workstation, office, or at a desk. The employee will operate/use a phone, computer, copier, and printer. The employee in this position frequently communicates with others and may do so in various ways as able. They may converse, convey, and exchange accurate information via phone, text, written, e-mail, or face to face.
