SUMMARY
The Teaching Artist is an innovative educator in the Learning and Interpretation department, working with youth and intergenerational groups in off-site outreach experiences and on-site art making. The Teaching Artist will create and facilitate creative, authentic, and project-based art lessons and workshops with a variety of audiences, with a focus on a specific neighborhood within the 2-mile radius of TMA. Reporting to and working closely with the Community Outreach Manager, the Teaching Artist will develop opportunities for the community to visit TMA and build relationships with partners and participants. This position is grant-funded, with potential opportunity for renewal after 3 years.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
The Teaching Artist performs the following essential duties both on site at TMA and offsite at partner locations. 
  • Acts as a visible and accessible, caring adult for participants in TMA art making programs during out of school time
  • Creates and facilitates creative, authentic, and project-based art lessons and workshops
  • With the Community Outreach Manager, develops projects and lessons that are responsive to audience interests and/or partner organization priorities
  • Maintains positive and proactive communication with partners and the Community Outreach Manager
  • Prepares and presents studio activities that involve big ideas, real materials, and hands-on experiences
  • Participates in self-reflection, training and evaluation processes as scheduled. Participates in professional development and studio practice activities
  • Performs related administrative duties preliminary and/or following studio workshops, including but not limited to submitting lesson plans and supply requests for workshops and tracking attendance during sessions
  • May provide direction to volunteers, interns, and part-time art instructors and supervision in the Community Outreach Manager’s absence
  • As a public benefit corporation, the Museum requires every staff member to always act as a visitor advocate. This includes acknowledging visitors and striving to make them feel welcome, comfortable, and eager to return
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports to Community Outreach Manager and may receive direction from Senior Director of Learning & Interpretation.
  • Works closely with other Learning & Interpretation staff including interns, volunteers and part-time art instructors; community partners; and Belonging & Community Engagement staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent. BA in Education, Art Education, Studio Art or related field preferred.
  • Requires 1-3 years’ experience teaching, preferably in community art programs and informal education spaces.
  • Familiarity with informal learning theory, community engagement and positive youth development.
  • Knowledgeable of or willing to learn about the Museum’s collections.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES
  • Creative educator with a passion for art education and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement art making projects.
  • Familiarity with art materials and contemporary art practices, including familiarity with software and hardware for technology-based art practices.
  • Willingness to adjust and adapt methods to accommodate emphasis on Museum pedagogy and resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual and ability to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently, is preferred.
  • Ability to work with people of a wide variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience, interest, and enthusiasm in working with youth and adults in an art museum, classroom or cultural setting.
  • Reliability and dependability must be able to attend sessions and work flexible hours (weekend and evenings required).
  • Ability to travel between TMA and off-site locations. A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are required.
  • Basic computer skills: ability to use internet and e-mail; knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position requires ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. Regularly works off-site at partner organizations to help facilitate programming. Position requires stamina to facilitate for periods of time.  Must be able to communicate verbally. Prepares for workshops and events, which includes moving equipment and supplies as appropriate. May occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
